Utility EDI 810 invoices and Trace Global

Receive utility invoices as ANSI X12 EDI 810 transactions so every charge line arrives structured, without PDF extraction.

Method
ANSI ASC X12 EDI 810 invoice transaction set over AS2 or VAN, with 997 functional acknowledgments
Direction
Bidirectional
Typical setup
2 to 4 weeks

Many investor-owned utilities and competitive suppliers send invoices to large commercial customers as ANSI X12 810 transactions. In restructured markets, utilities and suppliers also exchange 810, 867 usage and 820 remittance documents under state EDI standards. Structured EDI is the most reliable bill source we work with: charge codes, quantities and service periods come through as data, not text on a page.

Trace Global can receive 810 files directly as a trading partner over AS2, through your value-added network mailbox, or as a copy of the feed your bill-pay vendor already receives. We return 997 functional acknowledgments so the sender knows each interchange was accepted.

Each utility uses its own implementation guide for the 810. We map every utility's segment and charge code conventions to one schema, so a demand charge from one utility and a demand charge from another land in the same field.

How the data feeds the audit

  • Flag estimated reads from the read-type codes before they compound into a large true-up.
  • Test each charge line's unit price against the published tariff for the service period.
  • Check tax segments against the exemption certificates on file for each site.
  • Detect duplicate invoice numbers and overlapping service periods across feeds.

Setup

  1. 1Send us each utility's 810 implementation guide or a set of recent files.
  2. 2Choose AS2, VAN mailbox or a copy of your bill-pay vendor's feed.
  3. 3Exchange trading partner IDs and AS2 certificates.
  4. 4Run a parallel test month and reconcile it to the paper or PDF bills.
  5. 5Switch the feed to production and confirm 997 acknowledgments.

Utility EDI 810 invoices questions

No. Most large investor-owned utilities offer it for commercial accounts, but many municipal and cooperative utilities do not. We combine EDI with portal and PDF capture so every account is covered.

No. We can receive a copy of the same files, so your payment process does not change.

Each utility treats trading partner setup as its own project, with certificate exchange and a test cycle. The timeline is mostly the utility's queue.
