Green Button Connect My Data is the utility-hosted version of the Green Button standard, built on the NAESB REQ.21 Energy Services Provider Interface (ESPI). A customer authorizes a third party once, through OAuth 2.0 on the utility's site, and the utility then makes usage and billing data available to that third party on a schedule.
Several large utilities, including PG&E, SCE and San Diego Gas & Electric, offer Connect My Data to commercial customers. Where it is available, it is the cleanest way to get interval data for meters that are not on EDI, because the data comes from the utility's own meter data management system.
Trace Global is registered as a third party with participating utilities. You grant access per account in the utility's portal, and you can revoke it there at any time.
How the data feeds the audit
- Rebuild each month's billed peak demand from the utility's own interval data.
- Allocate usage to time-of-use periods and compare with the on-peak and off-peak kWh on the bill.
- Test whether a site's load profile qualifies for a lower-cost rate schedule.
- Spot meters whose interval data flat-lines while bills keep showing usage, a sign of estimation or crossed meters.
Setup
- 1List the accounts at utilities that offer Connect My Data.
- 2Sign in to each utility portal and authorize Trace Global as the third party.
- 3Select the service points and the data scope to share.
- 4Confirm the first data delivery in your Trace Global workspace.
Data exchanged
| Object | Detail |
|---|---|
| UsagePoint | Each service point the customer authorizes, with its service kind (electricity, gas, water). |
| IntervalBlock and IntervalReading | Interval energy values with timestamps and durations, typically 15-minute or hourly. |
| ReadingType | Units, multipliers, accumulation behavior and interval length, so values are scaled correctly. |
| UsageSummary | Billing-period totals and costs where the utility publishes them. |
| Authorization | Scope, expiry and status of each OAuth grant, so we can alert you before access lapses. |
